Pet Dental Services at Yarraville Vet

Like us, our pets need regular dental checks to ensure that their teeth and gums are healthy. Dental disease affects 4 out of every 5 cats and dogs over the age of three years and, aside from being painful for your pet, can cause serious complications. A build-up of plaque and tartar that accumulates on your pet’s teeth causes infection in the gums. Excess bacteria from dental infections can enter the bloodstream causing issues such as heart, liver, and kidney disease if left untreated.

If identified and treated early, larger problems can be stopped before they have a chance to become life-threatening. In the most part, procedures are recommended in an afflicted pet, to remove plaque and tartar, and to resolve any infection.

How can I tell if my pet is suffering from dental disease?

Cats and dogs can be very secretive, and so it is worth ensuring that they have a dental check-up at least yearly. Senior pets age faster than younger animals, so we recommend a twice-yearly check to determine if dental disease is developing in pets over the age of 7.

While it can be hard to tell if they are suffering, some visual cues are helpful in determining if you should take action:

  • Drooling
  • Smelly breath
  • Discolouration in the teeth or gums
  • Reluctance to eat
  • Weight loss

What can I expect for my pet at a dental check?

At a dental appointment, we will take an in-depth look at the state of your pet’s mouth, teeth, and gums. If dental disease is identified, we may recommend further blood tests or x-rays to determine the severity of the problem. In this case, will discuss this with you as necessary before taking action for your pet.

At Yarraville Vet Clinic, cleanings are performed under anaesthetic, as we can’t simply ask your pet to “open wide!” Dental cleaning under anaesthetic ensures that teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly – and allows us to limit the possibility of painful infection for your pet. We are committed to the ethical treatment of all of our patients, and will work with you to ensure that they are treated with the utmost care and compassion.
